Motion S5M-07643: Size Matters

That the Parliament notes the report that has been published by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) and Slimming World, Size Matters, which looks at the marketing tactics used by various businesses to get customers to buy larger portions of food and drink than they had originally intended; understands that such processes, which are known as verbal up-selling, can lead to one-in-three buying a larger coffee than planned, upgrading to a large meal in a fast-food outlet and buying chocolate at the till in petrol stations; notes the report’s findings suggesting that this can lead to the average person consuming an extra 17,000 calories each year and that it is a major driver in the rise of obesity; welcomes the RSPH and Slimming World’s call for businesses to pledge to only upsell healthy items, and believes that taking on the issues highlighted in this report are a great step towards tackling the problem of obesity.

Motion S5M-07152: The Right to Self-determination

That the Parliament believes in the fundamental right to self-determination, which is enshrined in the charter of the United Nations; notes that the Catalonian and Kurdish people will be turning to this right to determine their future in the coming months; understands that the Catalonian Government has scheduled a referendum on 1 October 2017 on whether to become an independent republic and that Iraqi Kurdistan will be holding a referendum on 25 September on whether to form an independent Kurdish state; considers that while each nation is in its own unique constitutional position, each has the right to self-determination, and looks forward to Catalonia, Kurdistan and Scotland all becoming independent nations.

Motion S5M-07140: Education Success

That the Parliament notes that Scottish school pupils achieved more than 150,000 higher passes for the third year in a row; welcomes the news that a record number of students from deprived backgrounds achieved entry into university; understands that the number of students from the 20% most deprived areas being accepted to university has risen by 13% compared to the previous year; notes that, alongside a record number of students from deprived backgrounds being accepted, there has also been a record number of students in general getting places at Scottish universities, and considers that these figures represent tangible progress in the ongoing efforts to widen access to education, underline the strength of Scottish education and confirm that this is a sector in which the people of Scotland can all take great pride.

Motion S5M-07133: Gold Medal for Scotland at EuroHockey Men’s Championship II

That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish hockey men’s team on its 2-1 victory over Wales to secure the gold medal for Scotland at the EuroHockey Men’s Championship II in Glasgow; understands that the Scotland hockey team will be going on to compete in the European A division for the first time since 2005 as a result of reaching the final; notes that, not only did the team win the title, it was also undefeated in every one of its matches over the week; further notes that Pakistan will play its home matches in the Hockey Pro-League from January 2019 in Glasgow, and considers that hockey has the potential to grow further as a sport in Scotland as it is suitable for players of all ages and backgrounds.
