Title: Ending the Poll Tax
Motion Text:
That the Parliament welcomes the fact that turnout and voter registration for the 2014 Scottish independence referendum was at an unprecedented level; understands that in the past a considerable number of people did not register to vote for fear of the community charge, referred to as the “poll tax”; considers that all taxes should be paid whether they are fair or unfair; considers that one of the main reasons why people have not paid outstanding poll tax is that they were unable to do so, and welcomes the recent news from the Scottish Government that legislation will be brought forward to stop local authorities wasting scarce resources pursuing poll tax arrears that, after 20 years, are very unlikely to be paid.
