Following this evening’s debate and vote on same sex marriage, where Parliament agreed to the general principles of the Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill by 98 votes to 15, John Mason said:
“It is perhaps not surprising that Parliament has approved the Bill at this stage by a wide margin. In this respect I do not think Parliament is reflecting public opinion where there is more of an even balance.
I continue to be concerned that there are not adequate safeguards in place for those who might criticise same sex marriages. This si something the Equal Opportunities Committee will look at at Stage 2. At the very least I would look for stronger safeguards. However, I remain unconvinced that either the Scottish or UK Governments is actually able to provide such safeguards.”
