SNP Member of the Scottish Parliament for Glasgow Shettleston, John Mason, has written to the Scottish Government to raise the issue of subsidence in the Bridgeton area of his constituency, following a total lack of information from Glasgow City Council.

The East End MSP has written to Transport Minister, Keith Brown MSP, concerning buildings which have been evacuated on Glasgow’s London Road since early January this year.

Commenting, SNP’s John Mason, whose constituency includes Bridgeton, said:

“This has been a difficult time for a number of my constituents, who have been left with no access to their homes or businesses.

“The slow rate of progress and lack of information from Glasgow City Council on this matter is totally unacceptable.

“Enough is enough. Both I and my SNP Council colleague, Councillor Alison Thewliss, have repeatedly asked for updates from the Council but information has not been forthcoming.

“Like many residents, I am exasperated that, one and half months on, action is still very slow and this is having a significant impact on peoples’ lives, local transport and the local economy. If the Council is being hampered by out-of-date legislation, then we need to look at that. But in the 21st century it is not acceptable that major roads like Sauchiehall Street previously, and now London Road are closed for significant lengths of time.

“My top priority is my constituents and that is why I am determined to ensure all agencies, police, local government and the Scottish Government, if need be, are working together to restore some normality to London Road and the Bridgeton area.”

Local SNP Councillor for Calton ward, Alison Thewliss, added:

“Just recently I was in Bridgeton and a local Librarian was even telling me that the number of visitors in Bridgeton Library has reduced significantly. I fear this is having a similar impact on local businesses, therefore it is imperative that the Council get a move on and getting Bridgeton moving again.”
